Social Media Review

JFC is seeking a consultant to review IranWire's Persian language social media operations and provide recommendations for improvements to social media presentation and operations that will improve quality, efficiency, audience engagement, and grow overall audience. The review will focus primarily on Instagram, IranWire's dominant social media platform but should also include information relevant to Twitter.

Specifically, consultant shall:

  • Review social media operational practices, including but not limited to:

    • Methods for choosing IranWire news and information stories for posting

    • How stories are assigned posting

    • How stories from website are repurposed for social media

    • Choice of posting days/times

    • Involvement of other team members in production (video, graphics, copyediting, etc.)

    • How posts are monitored and feedback provided to staff

  • Review writing, graphics, photos, videos in social media posts for clarity, suitability to format and current and potential audience, conveying key points from stories

  • Review audience engagement practices and results, including by key demographic categories such as gender and age

  • Review IranWire in context of current social media trends in general and as it relates to competitor news operations.

  • Review real vs. fake followers on Instagram and Twitter

  • Provide final report detailing findings and making practical suggestions for improvements, taking into account limited resources. Report shall include recommendation for:

    • Improving processes and methods of editorial process for social media content

    • Improving content - written, photo, graphic, video, etc. for Instagram and Twitter in particular

    • Growing female audience

    • Improving audience engagement

    • Ensuring IranWire stays current with social media trends

    • Use and application of paid and unpaid promotion and advertising strategies

    • Staffing and trainings for social media staff

    • Deterring and removing fake users

Report should include projected metrics measuring improvements at 3, 6, and 12 months if IranWire were to adopt them (e.g., growth in audience, engagement, etc.)

We anticipate 10-15 days of work involving review of social media, interviews with key personnel, and report writing. There is the possibility for additional engagement to help implement specific recommendations.

Ideal consultant profile:

  • Individual or team

  • Fluency in Persian (English language fluency also preferred)

  • Understanding of Iranian social media environment and general Iranian political, economic, and social environment

  • Knowledge of social media best practices for news operations

  • Knowledge of Instagram and Twitter best practices for audience growth and engagement

  • Journalism experience

  • Knowledge of filtering and suppression tools and methods in Iran
